Treasures of Art, Industry and Manufacture Represented in the American Centennial Exhibition at Philadelphia 1876. Edited by C.B. Norton. Cosack & Co., Buffalo, NY, 1877. Special Presentation Copy for Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil. Large folio, 51 color plates with descriptive pages in English and French, pebbled maroon covers with ornate raised panels, gilt-lettered spine, gilt edged pages forming pattern. Presentation page: "Dedicated to His Imperial Majesty Dom Pedro II. Emperor of Brazil, as a Memorial from the People of the United States to One Who has Secured their Permanent Esteem and Friendship Through the Interest Shown by Him in Their National Progress, as Exemplified at the International Exhibition at Philadelphia and as a Tribute to His Distinguished Record in Education and Science". A benevolent and thoughtful ruler, Dom Pedro II, the last emperor of Brazil (1831-1889), bought stability and progress to his country. Sadly his abolition of slavery and his forward-thinking set him at odds with the country's landed classes and he was forced to abdicate after a military coup on November 15, 1889. Very minor scuff to cover and a few minor scuffs to frontispage. An impressive and Fine Presentation Edition.
