[California History]: Kibbe, William Chauncey (1822-1904). California pioneer, third Adjutant General of California that oversaw the California Militia from its beginning through most of the Civil War. Document Signed "Wm C Kibbe" as President of the State Board. State of California certificate, 8 1/3 x 5 1/2, pale blue-gray, Sacramento, August 15, 1861. Document certifies that A. Pool has been allowed the sum of $273.33 for his services as a teamster in the 1855 Siskiyou "Expedition against the Indians" in the "Modoc War" [in present day, "The Modoc War" refers to the 1872-1873 armed conflict between the Modoc people and the US Army in California and southern Oregon; this is an earlier usage which refers to a series of hostilities between the Modoc people and California militia and settlers which was set off by the massacre of an innocent Modoc village in the early 1850s by a militia unit]. Small edge tear. Fine.
