Sheridan, Philip Henry. "Little Phil", "Fighting Phil" - Civil War Union General, rose rapidly to rank of Major General.; defeated Confederate forces under General Jubal Early in the Shenandoah Valley, his destruction of the Valley's economic infrastructure known as the "Burning" was one of the earliest uses of scorched earth tactics in the war; in 1865 his cavalry pursued Robert E. Lee leading to his surrender at Appomattox; later fought in the Plains Indian Wars; instrumental in the establishment and protection of Yellowstone National Park; appointed General-in-Chief of the US Army in 1883, and General of the Army in 1888. Autograph Signed "P.H. Sheridan Lieut General U.S.A.". Sheridan became a three-star general in 1884. On cut white paper, 5 x 2 ¾". Very Fine. Matted with an 1884-1887 period photo of Sheridan, and attractively framed, 10 ¼ x 12 1/3".
