Nineteenth President of the United States (1877-1881), elected president in one of the most contentious elections in U.S. history; staunch abolitionist and defender of civil rights; two-time Governor of Ohio. Document Signed "R B Hayes" as President. 16 ¾ x 9 ½", handwritten appointment of A.E.L. Keese as Notary Public for the District of Columbia, July 18, 1878. Hayes signs at lower right and Frederick W. Seward signs below as Acting Secretary of State. Embossed seal at left. Light soiling and stain on center crease. Fine. Matted and framed, (glass cracked), 23 ½ x 16 ¾".
