American-born British billionaire oil mogul, Getty family patriarch, founded Getty Oil Co., named world's richest private citizen by the Guinness Book of World Records in 1966, with a worth of $1.2 billion; despite his vast wealth was notoriously frugal, infamously negotiating his grandson's Italian kidnapping ransom in 1973; avid collector of art and antiquities, established the J.
