Carnegie, Andrew (1835-1919). Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist; led expansion of the American steel industry; became one of the richest Americans in history; espoused the idea that it was the duty of the rich to use their wealth to improve society; during the last 18 years of his life, he gave away $350 million to charities, foundations and universities. Typed Letter Signed "Andrew Carnegie. One page, 4 7/8 x 8", Cluny Castle, Kincussie, Scotland, August 3, 1895. Writing to Mr. Rideing of the Isle of Wight, Carnegie says Rideing's note is at hand, and that he has not mentioned the subject to Mr. Morley. "The price offered was not to be thought of." Carnegie signs in black below. Very Fine.
