American businessman, investor and politician; as a congressman, credited by historians as being the single most important influence in the building of the Union Pacific portion of the transcontinental railroad; also noted for the subsequent scandal which alleged the improper sale of stock in the railroad's construction company. Document Signed "Oakes Ames". Partially printed check, North Easton, Feb. 5, 1842 for $350 payable to Oliver Ames (his brother). Ames signs below. Small piece missing from lower left edge.
