Russian Icon. Contemporary Theotokos. 1848. Silver riza or oklad over tempera on wood. 10 1/3 x 12 1/3". Contemporary-attired Madonna wearing a striped green cloak and red blouse seated holding swaddled Child, Joseph (?) behind, young petitioner before. Velvet backing. Maker's mark "A?", silver mark "84" and date "A.K / 1848" bottom edge. Some contact marks on tempera from silver frame, top of the oklad missing and a few old solder marks on back.
