Costa Rica. Military Payment Certificate. 7 Pesos. San José, June 11, 1856. No. 684. Oval "Commandancia Gral Costa-Rica" stamped bottom left, printed name of Commander Jose J. Mora (José Joaquín Mora Porras) bottom mid-right. Issued during the war against the American adventurer "filibuster" William Walker. After Walker's arrival in 1855 in civil-war torn Nicaragua, along with the group of recruits known as the "Immortals, to overthrow the legitimist President Fruto Chamorro Pérez, Mora was placed in charge of a Costa Rican expeditionary army. Following the Battle of Santa Rosa, March 22, 1856, and the Battle of Rivas, April 11, 1856, Mora was appointed Commander Generalissimo of the Allied Armies of Central America. His military strategy led to Walker's surrender on May 1, 1857. Good Very Fine.
