United States. Documents and papers of Captain John R. Alvord, USMC for conspicuous courage and heroism in combat at Midway Islands, June 1942. Includes: Purple Heart Award document, Navy Cross and Presidential Unit Citation award letters, sepia photo, panoramic photo of the 29th Pursuit Squadron, Albrook Field, Canal Zone; Appointment to Second Lieutenant, USMC, Sept 5, 1939 signed by Acting Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal; and extensive copies (forming a 1 ½ inch-thick file) of his military record and related paperwork. Flying in the 221st Squadron, Alvord was officially MIA when his F2A-3 plane was shot down while engaged in aerial combat during the Japanese attack on Midway.
