HMS Challenger 1872-1876 Worldwide Voyage. Report on the Scientific Results of the Challenger Expedition, 1886-1895. Medal. Cast Bronze, 75mm. By William S. Black and William Birnie Rhind, RSA. Awarded to geographer and RGS librarian Hugh Robert Mill - H.R. MILL (edge). Minerva and owl at center, branch around, Neptune upper left, two mermaids below supporting ribbon inscribed VOYAGE OF THE CHALLENGER 1872-76, rev. Knight standing left throwing his gauntlet to Neptune in the sea. The discoveries of the HMS Challenger Expedition helped lay the foundation of Oceanography. The ship sailed close to Antarctica but not within sight of it. Very rare, with only 120 medals issued. Extremely Fine.
