Great Britain. Arctic Medal, 1875-76 (Thos. Stubbs. Stoker H.M.S. Alert.), good very fine

A total of 155 Arctic 1875-76 medals were awarded, including 62 to the 'Alert', whose teams penetrated furthest north during the expedition.

Thomas Stubbs took part in the sledging expedition on the sledge Challenger, under Lieutenant Pelham Aldrich, R.N. in 1876. Leaving their ship on 3 April, they covered some 630 statute miles over 84 days and returned on 26 June.
