1863 Major General Ulysses S. Grant Medal. Julian MI-29c. Copper. 102.5mm, 10.3mm thick. By Anthony C. Paquet. Uniformed bust left, ornate frame of wreathes and thirteen stars around, signed ANTROBUS.D. and PAQUET.F. below truncation, rev. Allegory of Commerce seated on a furled cloth atop a rainbow looking down on views of Vicksburg and Chattanooga which are separated by trophies of war. Commerce holds a US shield inscribed DONELSON and a cornucopia in her other hand; an eagle grasps the furled cloth in its beak to the left; around all is a circular border representing the Mississippi River with four steamboats with an outer border of thirteen stars.
Paquet contracted with John Antrobus of Chicago who represented the Treasury Department on May 5, 1864 to execute the Grant dies within seven months. The dies were delivered to Director Pollock shortly after November 198, 1864, when Antrobus officially accepted the work. 126 pieces were struck in Copper. Rare. Glossy mahogany surfaces. Uncirculated. A lovely and impressive medal. Ex Sotheby's Sale, New York, June 25-26, 1999, lot 661.
