England/Great Britain. A Collection of Roman and British coins excavated in the River Thames from the collection of noted archaeologist Ivor Noël Hume, OBE. First Century BC-1774. The Roman (27), includes Asses of Agrippa, Titus, Vespasian and Domitian, Dupondii of Vespasian and various smaller AEs, radiates and minims. The English includes Plantagenet AR Pennies, Tudorian Halfgroats, Sixpence, Shillings, some Stuart silver, Commonwealth Twopence (2); James II and William and Mary tin coinage, various Charles II-George III Farthings and Halfpennies; and a William III 60% tin Halfpenny apparently struck from official dies - 1957 correspondence between The Ashmolean Museum and Hume and Seaby and Hume regarding this coin and its analysis is included. Each coin identified by where it was found - Billingsgate, Queenhithe, Walbrook Mouth, St. Mary Overies Dock, Winchester Wharf, Dowgate, etc. British-born Ivor Noël Hume, OBE (1927-2017) was heralded by his peers as the "Father of historical archaeology." After a brief stint in the British Army in World War II and as an assistant staff manager at a London theatre, Hume joined the staff at the Guildhall Museum in London in 1949. In 1957, he became chief archaeologist and director of the expanded Colonial Williamsburg archaeology program, serving in that role for three decades. Among his many works in the field, was his discovery and excavation of the 17th Century Wolstenholme Towne at Carter's Grove Plantation just east of Williamsburg. Coins grade Fair to Very Fine.
