B>Great Britain. Victoria (1837-1901). Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Carlisle Railway, 1840. Directors' and Shareholders' Medal. Silver, 50.3mm. By W. Wyon. Mercury flying left over town and landscape, between which a train crosses a viaduct, rev Winged caduceus flanked by shields of Newcastle and Carlisle. Two cornucopiae tied below; BY ORDER OF THE SHAREHOLDERS MARCH XXIV MDCCCXL; in outer margin, engraved to: JOHN ADAMSON ESQR. SECRETARY. John Adamson (1787-1855) was a noted antiquarian and Portuguese scholar - decorated by Queen Maria of Portugal for his service to Portuguese literature. He was one of the founders of the Antiquarian Society of Newcastle in 1813. Other than serving as secretary for the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway Co., Adamson was the Under-Sheriff of Newcastle until 1835. BHM 1983, Eimer 1339, Moyaux 17. Lovely old tone.
