Syria, the Holy land, Asia Minor &c, Illustrated. By John Carne. In a Series of views drawn from nature by W.H. Bartlett, William Purser, &c. Three Volumes. Fisher, Son & Co., London, (1836-1838). Quarto. Engraved title pages and numerous interior engravings, gold edged pages. Dark wine red embossed hardcovers. John Carne left England in 1821 and traveled through the Near East, Palestine and Greece. The book was published some time after his return, initially in thirty parts of four plates each. Many of the plates in Volume III are after drawings by Thomas Allom who was commissioned by the publishers to complete the illustrations. At the time the book was one of the few works to include what is present-day Lebanon. Ex Libris Eugénie L. Pouliot, Toronto 1918. Some foxing and staining, light scuffs to covers. Volume III cover has separated. Good.
