Auction: 342 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale
Lot: 770
CSA, T-12, $5, July 25, 1861, Cr-48. PF-1. No. 1301. H. "Manouvrier." Blue back with "CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA." VF details. Some soiling on the back. Nearly full margins on the front; full margins on the back. CSA Treasury officials, desperately seeking the ability to increase the volume of Confederate notes available to them, placed an order for $5 and $10 bills with J. Manouvrier of New Orleans. When his first shipment arrived in Richmond it was not well received. The $5 notes appeared to be easily counterfeited, and some of the $10 notes were missing. The Treasury officials reluctantly accepted the $5 notes, destroyed all of the $10 notes, and never placed any further orders with Manouvrier. To make matters worse, the paper the notes were printed on was very thin, so the notes wore out quickly.
