Islamic Copper and Silver inlay circular tray. Late Ottoman Empire, ca. 1910-1920. Diameter 12". With three names of the One God - Ar-Rahman, Ya Hadi and Ya Wahhab, and arabesques in the central area. On the raised rim are two cartouches, one with the name "Alek Loudon", the other with the name "Alek Birawn" (Brown), mystic knots and ornaments.
Alexander Loudon was the Dutch Ambassador to the United States during WWII. He joined the Netherlands diplomatic service in 1916, and his second posting was to Turkey, where he apparently had this plate made. The identity of Alexander Brown is uncertain. Attractive.
