Civil War, Prisoners of War: "Life And Death in Rebel Prisons". By Robert H. Kellogg, Sergeant-Major 16th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers. L. Stebbins, Hartford, CT 1865. Octavo, original gilt-stamped, brown pebbled cloth covers. First edition of Kellogg's compelling first-hand account of his incarceration in Confederate prisons. Ex Libris - A.C. Hill inside front cover, light pencil notations opposite page. A sound and Very Good example; also included is a Good Content Letter rejoicing in Robert E. Lee's Surrender. Four pages on folded 8x10 ruled paper, dated "Home. Apr. 10th 1865". Writing to his brother who is in the Union Army, the author, apparently living in upstate NY begins: "Dear Brother; Hurrah! Three cheers for Grant Sheridan and the whole army of the Potomac. But still more Glorious news. Lee surrendered his whole forces to Gen. Grant, is not that grand. Guns have been firing in all directions all day and the way the old ball and anvil have kept it up has not been slow. We have just read the paper giving a full account of Lees surrender, and also a letter from you to Rob saying you were all right. I hardly know which did us the most good to hear that you were safe at so late a date as the taking of Petersburgh or the good news…" Very Fine. [2]
