John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916). Commander of the Virginia Cavalry 43rd Battalion known as "Mosby's Rangers." He conducted daring lightning quick raids, deep into enemy territory and then disappeared by blending in with the surrounding general population. In one such raid, Mosby captured Union General Edwin H. Stoughton, who was caught sleeping. Mosby signs his name in black ink on an envelope, dated September 11, 1913, and addressed by him to Mrs. Lena Noland Hall. The envelope is professionally matted and framed, along with an image of Mosby and a plaque that summarizes his career. The outside dimension of the frame are 23" x 19".
