America siue India Nova ad magnae Gerardi Mercatoris auri Vniversalis imitationem in compendium redacta. Michaelem Mercatorem, Duysburgensem, Flanders, 1595. Jodocus Hondius bought Mercator's plates in 1604 and continued to issue the map. 18 x 14 ½" (plus broad margins). Copper engraving, hand colored, ca. 1613-1630. Lovely map of the Western Hemisphere and the only known map made by Michael Mercator, grandson of Gerardus Mercator. Four rondels are set at map's corners with insets of the title, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, the Gulf of Mexico, and Cuba and Florida. Vertical center crease. Very Good.
