Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts ("Lord Roberts of Kandahar"). One of the most successful British Commanders of the 19th Century. Autograph Letter Signed "Roberts". Three pages on 7 x 8 7/8 folded paper, dated Rawalpindi 5th April 1892. Writing to Sir John, Roberts says "I can understand you being diffident about undertaking the work imposed on you by Lady Lytton, but no-one is so capable as you are of writing the history…You may depend on my giving you every assistance…I had great affection for Lord Lytton, and it would be a labor of love to me to help remove the cloud which has obscured his work while Viceroy of India".
