Montgomery, Field Marshal Bernard Law, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. Nicknamed "The Spartan General" and "Monty", Senior British officer who served in both World War I and II, commanded British Eighth Army in the Western Desert from August 1942 to the Allied victory in Tunisia, May 1943, a command which included the pivotal Second Battle of El Alamein. Autograph Letter Signed "Yours ever Montgomery of Alamein". 5 ½ x 7 1/3", Islington Mill, Alton, Hants, dated 29-9-59. Montgomery writes to a Mr. Wansbrough in light blue ink: "I must thank you for the very efficient arrangements for my visit to Plymouth to open the new Guildhall. I was most comfortable and very well looked after. Will you please convey my appreciation to the General Manager of the Western Region. The diesel engine which brought my train to London on Thursday evening was the "Sir Brian Robertson". We arrived at Paddington exactly on time, to the second!! Tell Brian."
