United States. Navy Lieutenant's Bicorne Hat and Epaulettes. Ca. late 19th Century. Black felt, diagonal sashes with gilt Navy button, gold bullion "slinky" coils front and back. Imprint of "Midshipmen's Store U.S.N.A. inside and size tag "7 1/8". French-made ("HB") epaulettes, gold coils, silver Navy fouled anchor and rank insignia, gilt button. In original carrying case, inside which is a small 1880 Standard Diary No. 19 presented to "Orlando Shepard by his mother March 14/ 1880" with various date entries for what appears to have been a European trip by Shepard. It is unclear whether Shepard is the owner of the bicorne. A Very Fine set.
