France. Thonnelier Essai, 1843. Copper, on a reduced module of 30mm. Turreted head of Ceres left, rev. ESSAI DE LA VIROLE BRISÉE DE THONNELIER 1843 within wreath. Normally this type is 37mm with a star above Ceres and the legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. This piece was struck on a reduced module or mechanically cut-down to deliberately leave out the Republican reference. Very Fine.
