Syria. Seleucis ad Pieria. Antioch. Q. Caecilius Bassus, defacto Proconsul (46-44 BC). AR Tetradrachm, CE 4 (46/5 BC). 15.66 gms. In the name of and types of the Seleukid Philip I Philadelphos. Diademed head right, rev. Zeus Nicephorus seated left, Antioch monogram before, date ? in ex. Prieur 5, RPC 4128. Bassus, a lieutenant of Pompey the Great, fled to Tyre after the Battle of Pharsalus. In Syria, he led an insurrection against the governor, Sextus Julius Caesar, a cousin of Gaius Julius Caesar. Bassus held power for two years, fending off his enemies, before falling to Cassius. A few minor green deposits obverse. Good Very Fine.
