Mexico. Emilio Carranza Medal for Merit. Gold, 37.2mm. Approx. 43.35 gms. Mexico City mint. Bust of Captain Carranza, called the "Lindbergh of Mexico" right, palm frond before, vital dates below, rev. Front of plane flying left; VUELO MECIO - WASHINGTON below. Mexico's great aviator Emilio Carranza (1905-1928) set a number of records, including the first nonstop flight from Mexico City to Juarez in 1927. He became a national hero in 1928 when he flew a goodwill flight from Valbuena Airfield in Mexico City to Washington, DC - this in response to Lindbergh's flight the previous year between the two capitals. On his return home, he was killed when his plane crashed in the woods during a thunderstorm over the Pinelands in southern New Jersey. The Carranza Merit Medal is presented to pilots who have completed 10,000 flight hours. On riband with "AL MERITO" suspension bar. Extremely Fine.
