Shaw, George Bernard (1856-1950). Two copies of Back to Methuselah. The first has a short inscription by GBS that reads "to Phyllis Shand who was in the first cast by G Bernard Shaw, Birmingham 12th Oct 1923." The spine is loose, but otherwise decent. The second copy has notations by Shaw on a blank page that precedes the title page. These notations, all in Shaw's hand, read as follows: "This must be a first edition. I have made notes on pp 1782212. G. B. S. 25/8/29." Second note reads "I have just come across a copy in which Constable's imprint is dated 1921; so I must withdraw the above remark about this being a first edition. I am not a trusted bibliographer. G. Bernard Shaw 11/10/29. The test, by the way, is on pXXXIV. In the 7th line from the foot occur the words "Father Addis," In the earlier edition this reads "a Jesuit priest." A deluge of letters from indignant Oratorians made me aware that I had committed a gross blunder. see also XXXVI, line 7 from foot. G. B. S." Included is a receipt from Gabriel Wells, Books and Autographs, dated February 8, 1922, for $300 for the 1921 1st edition, and the 1922 edition.
