Auction: 339 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale at NY INC, Grand Hyatt

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) Medal. 39mm, 53.89 grams, platinum, Gem Proof. Designed and executed by Anthony de Francisci, the designer of the Peace Dollar. Housed in a custom holder. The obverse features President Kennedy facing left, surrounded by "KENNEDY 1917-1963." The reverse has an eternal flame at the center with "AND THE GLOW FROM THAT FIRE / CAN TRULY LIGHT THE WORLD." Plain edge. The National Commemorative Society, in accordance with their bylaws, ordered only one sterling silver medal per member to be issued. In addition, three presentation pieces were struck in platinum. One example was presented to the Smithsonian Institution, one was retained by the National Commemorative Society for exhibition purposes, and a third example was auctioned off for the benefit of the American Numismatic Society Building Fund, thus it is the only platinum example in private hands.
