Papal States. Innocenzo XI -- Benedetto Odescalchi (1676-1689). Scudo d'oro, nd. Roma. Crown and crossed keys above Odescalchi Arms, rev. POSSIDE SAPIENTIAM ("Obtain Wisdom") within wreath. Ber.2079, CNI 169, Fr.159. A frugal, conscientious man, Innocenzo XI abolished sinecures, pushed for greater simplicity in preaching and greater reverence in worship. Known as the "Savior of Hungary", he organized the Holy League alliance which relieved the Ottoman siege of Vienna, contributed millions of scudi to the Turkish War fund of Austria and Hungary, and mobilized Christian princes to expel the Turks from Hungary. A reformist and financially austere and responsible, he instituted a major monetary reform, balanced the papal budget and created a surplus. PCGS AU 58.
