Papal States. Bologna. Giulio II -- Giuliano Della Rovere (1503-1513). Ducato Papale, nd. Papal crown over Della Rovere Arms, crossed keys behind; .IVLIVS. II. PONT. MAX, rev. St. Peter standing facing, flanked by City-Arms lower right and Alidosi Arms lower left. Ber.598, Fr.332a. Nephew of Sixtus IV, Giuliano was known as the "Warrior Pope". Clad in full armor, he personally led the Papal troops in retaking Perugia and Bologna. A great patron of the arts, he commissioned the destruction and rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica, and Michelangelo's work on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel. PCGS MS 63. One of the best known.
