Crossed keys, crescent above; .+BENEDITVS.PP.TREDECIVS, rev. Tiara; + SANTVS. PETRUS. ET. PAVLVS. Ber. 245, Fr.32b, Cf.Poey d'Avant 4210. On the death of Clemente VII, first Antipope of the Great Schism, the Aragonese nobleman Pedro Martinez de Luna y Pérez de Gotor was elected by the cardinals as Benoit XIII. His reign was supported by France, Scotland, Sicily, castile, Aragon, Navarre and Portugal. The conclave of cardinals who elected him greatly desired to reunite the church and asked for Pedro's promise to quell the schism. He did not, though he did attempt to open negotiations with Rome. The election of a second antipope, Alessandro V in 1409 saw his support fall away. Extremely Rare. PCGS AU 58.
