Pennsylvania. Company for Promoting the Cultivation of Vines in Pennsylvania. 1811. No.368. Embossed seal with a bunch of grapes, surrounded by "SEAL OF THE VINE COMPANY OF PENNSYLVANIA." Typeset form with indent, left. Signed by Hugh Ferguson and James Farnum. VF+. This was the first notable post-revolutionary attempt to establish a successful winery. In 1786, a Frenchman, Peter Legaux, bought a 206 acre estate at Spring Mill, on the east bank of the Schuykill River, not far from where William Penn had planted his own grape vines. This unique venture attracted the attention of George Washington who came to visit in Legaux in 1792. As time went on, Legaux found out that he would need to sell shares in order to survive, and he incorporated the Vine Company of Pennsylvania.
