Auction: 336 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale
Lot: 1827
Uncut Sheet of Thirty-Two Giori "Washington"Test Notes. In 1972 the Bureau of Engraving and Printing sent experimental plates to Germany in order to test the new Giori printing presses. These 1972 test pieces have black printing on the faces, and red printing on the backs. In 1976 another series of tests were made, this time in Geneva, New York on a Magna Press. The uniface green sheet of notes included in this lot was part of that test run. The sheet has 16 front notes featuring portraits of President Lincoln, Washington and Grant. The 16 back notes feature the upper portion of the Lincoln Monument. The sheet has the appears to be Uncirculated at first glance, but there are horizontal and vertical folds in the gutters between the notes. If cut, it would probably yield quite a number of Gem Uncirculated examples.
