Great Britain. Group of Miniatures, attributed to Air Commodore J.C. Russell, Royal Air Force, late Royal Flying Corps and Royal Engineers, one of a group of triplets who served during the Great War: Distinguished Service Order, G.V.R., silver-gilt and enamel; 1914-15 Star; British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. Oak Leaf; Belgium, Kingdom, Order of Leopold, silver-gilt and enamel. Mounted into a glazed case with attribution and an R.F.C. pin badge. (5)

John Cannan Russell was the eldest of triplets born on March 6 1895 in Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. Commissioned Second Lieutenant on 29 September 1914 into the Scottish Cable Signal Company, Royal Engineers he quickly transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, gaining a 'Mention' on 1 January 1916. Later awarded the D.S.O. he finished the Great War as a Major. Continuing in the newly formed Royal Air Force, Russell retied as an Air Commodore in 1943, having reputedly spent time as A.D.C. to the King during the Second War.
