Great Britain. Scinde 1843 Medal - for Hyderabad (LIEUTT W. ASHBURNER 3RD LT CAVY). Born in India in 1819, William Ashburner was nominated for commission by John Forbes at the recommendation of Lady Forbes. He was admitted Jan. 4, 1837, 3rd Light Cavalry at Nasserabad. Promoted to Lieutenant 1840. Severely wounded during the first Afghan War in action at the Heights near Hykulzie, April 28, 1842. Promoted to Captain, August 31, 1850; Commandant of the 3rd Regiment of Light Horse at Jhansi, 1859. With the Southern Mahratta Horse 1861, the 1st Regiment of Light Cavalry 1865. Ashburner was placed under arrest Oct. 9, 1845 and tried by court martial on a charge of having aspersed the character of Lt. Younghusband. He was honorably acquitted. In 1857, he served at the disposal of the Residency at Baroda for special duties. Acquired colloquial proficiency in Hindu. Allowed leave for two years to Australia, Feb. 14, 1853. Retired, India, Dec. 31, 1874. On ribbon (split). Numerous obverse contact marks. Once polished. About Extremely Fine.
