Great Britain. George II (1727-1760). King's Private Road Pass, 1737. Copper. Oval, 36 x 32mm. Crowned GR monogram, number "803" stamped below, rev. THE / KINGS / PRIUATE / ROADS, date below divided by TR monogram (Thomas Ripley, surveyor of the King's Private Road, 1737-1756). Mitchiner 5665, MG 731. Closed to public transport, the King's Private Road ran some 11 miles between St. James Court in London's west end to Hampton Court Palace upstream on the Thames at Richmond. Fees from the sale of the passes were used to pay the gatekeepers - who regulated traffic - and for road maintenance. Pierced for use. A pleasing example. Good Very Fine.
