New York. August 2, 1775. One Shilling. NY-172. "NEW-YORK WATER WORKS" across the top in red. Steam operated water pump on the dark paper back. Unissued. Very Fine. Trimmed close to the design at the top.
According to Newman, 2,000 of these notes were authorized, but they were not emitted. Newman reports that a proof exists. Our example appears to be on regular paper, and as such may well be the only one known. Neither Ford nor Newman had a One Shilling from this issue. A great New York Colonial rarity that may not be obtainable from any other source.
