Bennett, Royal Field Artillery: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during two days when the battery was incessantly shelled. He went from gun to gun spraying the gunpits and organising the supply of ammunition. He have a fine example of courage under trying circumstances."
D.C.M. Second Award Bar London Gazette 19 November 1917 34593 Battery Sergeant Major H. Bennett, Royal Field Artillery (Edinburgh): "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He assisted in extinguishing fires in an ammunition dump at the battery position and kept the battery in action under heavy shell fire. He set a splendid example to all ranks by his coolness and bravery."
