1857 James Buchanan Indian Peace Medal. Julian IP-36. Bronze. 76mm. By Salathiel Ellis and Joseph Willson. Mule. Buchanan bust right, rev. Settler, standing left, points at American flag, expounding merits of "civilization" to robed Indian chief standing before him, farming tools around, agrarian scene behind. This reverse was intended for the Millard Fillmore medal, Julian suggests that this muling was only struck in 1861. Orange-red mahogany. Uncirculated.
