Saudi Arabia. `Abd al-`Aziz b. Sa`ud (AH 1344-1373/1926-1953 AD). 4 Pounds, nd (1945-6). Philadelphia mint. American eagle; U.S. MINT PHILADELPHIA-U.S.A., rev. Three-line gold weight legend in lined rectangle. KM 34. Struck at the Philadelphia mint to be used as oil revenue payment to the Saudi government by the Arabian-American Oil Company (Aramco). In the 1940's, Aramco's contract with `Abd al-`Aziz's government required payment in gold. These pieces saw limited circulation in Saudi Arabia, some Aramco workers even used them as poker chips. Most were melted down into bullion and sold as gold bars in Macao.
