Ireland. University of Dublin. Tyrell Medal. Bronze. 39.5mm. By "J.W." Bare-headed bust left; WILLIAM GERALD TYRELL. BORN NOV. 28TH 1851. DIED AUG 28TH 1876 (the "6" reversed), rev. University Arms flanked by Tudor rose and portcullis; DULCES ANTE OMNIA MUSAE. The premature death of this promising young man was much mourned by the University. Tyrell's friends intended to institute a College medal commemorating Tyrell, according to Frazer, but the plan was never carried out. Frazer notes: "I believe only two impressions of this medal were struck, of which I have one in bronze." Extremely Rare. Frazer, Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, 1889, p.192. Glass reveals old black ink number on neck. Deep cacao-brown. EF-AU.
