Lot: 235

France, Constitution (1791-1792)
Louis d'Or 24 livres, 1793 A - An 5, Paris mint, gold, weight 7.60 g. ref. Gad.61, Fr.477, Dupl. 1717, exceptionally rare type with obv. showing Louis XVI bare head left, with hairs in a turban, rev. Génie writing the word CONSTI/TUTION on a table of the laws on an alter, left side a beam, right a hen.

This series was struck during a very short period of time starting from January 26, 1793, only 5 days after the beheading of Louis XVI.

Following a decree on February 5th 1793, the King's portrait disappeared from the observe and the striking of the 24 livres series was further abolished.

Thus, such coin type is exceptionally rare. A few AU coins are known to have survived, however this is most probably the sole so far known in mint state / extremely fine, SPL+ condition.

Highest and sole ever graded so far by PCGS in mint state.
