Great Britain. Scarce Great War 1918 M.C., 1916 M.M. Trio to 2nd Lt. J.M.D. Flint, 6th Battlalion, Highland Light Infantry (Territorial Force)
a) Military Cross (M.C.). Engraved: '"Beugneux" 2nd Lt. J.D. Flint, H.L.I. 1.8.1918'. In fitted deep purple case of issue
b) Military Medal (M.M.). Engraved on edge '3594 Pte. J.F. Flint. 1/9 H'LD:L.I. -T.F. The initial "J." is an engraver's error.
c) France, Republic. Croix de Guerre, 1914-1918 reverse, avec étoile
d) Four documents regarding the awarding of the Croix de Guerre and one personal note concerning the Military Cross, war diary for his MC, battle description for his MM along with other research.
Son of a famous comedian of that name, 2nd Lt. James McKenzie Downes Flint was prominent in the Highland Light Infantry's attack on German positions in High Wood near Longueval, July 14, 1916 for which he received the Military Medal. He was awarded the M.C. for actions at Beugneax in July 1918.
M.C. London Gazette. 7.11.1918 6th Bn. H.L.I., attached 1/5 K.O.S.B. -- "He showed fine leadership and courage during attacks, on one occasion clearing a portion of a village and capturing two machine guns. Later, he set a fine example while leading his platoon to the capture of a hill, where he was wounded."
On his notice from the War Office, Foreign Decorations Section, for his Croix de Guerre, it is noted in French: "Having shown the most handsome courage and the most precious qualities of leadership during the attacks near Beugneux - the 29th of July 1918. At the head of two sections, cleaned out this village and pushed to the North where he succeeded in capturing two enemy machine guns. The first of August deployed the same qualities of leadership and of bravery during the taking of Hill 158 to the east of the village."
