England. House of York. Edward IV or V (1483). Groat, mm halved sun and rose. 2.79 gms. Crowned bust, pellet below facing in tressure; EDWARD, rev. Cross fourchee over two circular legends, trefoils of pellets in inner angles. S.2146. With the ending of the prolific cinquefoil coinage of Edward IV on February 12, 1483, an indenture between the king and the new mintmaster, Bartholomew Reed saw the introduction of the sun and rose mintmark. After the death of Edward IV April 9th 1483, the sun and rose coinage continued, essentially unaltered, through the very brief reign of Edward V and into the beginning of the reign of Richard III, ending with the indenture of July 20, 1483.
