Auction: 326 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale
Lot: 1431
Irish Republic. 1860s. $50. Six Months, 6% bond. PROOF on India paper mounted on card. Green. Erin, represented as a maiden pointing to the rising sun. With her right hand, she points to a sword lying upon the ground. An Irish soldier stoops to grasp the sword with his eyes raised to the rising sun. An Irish wolf-hound crouches near the ancient Harp of Erin. Wolfe Tone, left. Edward FitzGerald, right. Continental Bank Note Company. Almost Uncirculated. Bonds such as these were used to raise money to support the Fenians, who raided Canada in hopes of forcing the English to withdraw from Ireland. Issued bonds are scarce, but obtainable at a price, but this Proof is probably unique, and Continental Bank Note proofs of stocks and bonds of any nature are very rare. Related engravings and a photographic image of William T. Cosgrove are included. Ex. Lot 7596 in Smythe's Memphis 1992 auction. From the Collection of John Herzog.
