Lockwood Union (New York) 1873. 45 shares. No.35. City by a river. Farmer plowing. Tall ship. N.P.RR locomotive. Signed by Lewis C. Lockwood. As the War Between the States wore on, an increasing number of colored persons sought the protection afforded by forts and camps of the United States. Some public authorities thought something should be done to send these "contrabands" to free states to obtain employment. General Butler stated that he would protect these people, and that there was plenty of room for them in Virginia. The American Missionary Association appointed Reverand Lewis C. Lockwood to prepare them for future employment. VF+. From the Collection of John Herzog.
