Eliot, George (Mary Ann Evans Lewes, 1819-1880). English novelist, journalist, and translator. One of the most important writers of the Victorian era. ALS, one page, 8vo. The Priory (North Bank, Regents Park) is written at upper right. Black border (she was in mourning for George Henry Lewes, the already married gentleman she lived with, who had died in November of 1878.) Written to Nicholas Trubner, her publisher. "Dear Mr. Trubner, Will you kindly order a copy of "The Study of Psychology" to be sent to each of the gentlemen whose names I have written on the enclosed paper? W. Tull's adress I do not know, but he is one of the London University Examiners. Yours very truly, M. E. Lewes." George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans. Despite the fact that female authors were published under their own names during her lifetime, Eliot felt she would not be taken seriously unless her stories appeared to have been written by a man. There is a small fold split at left, but the overall condition of the letter is Very Good. From the Collection of Diana Herzog.
