Hard Times Token. South Carolina. HT-309. Low-128. 1837. R. E. Russell. Feuchtwanger's German Silver Alloy. Eagle, 1837 below. On the reverse, rosettes below, I. O. U. 12 1/2 c. Long attributed to New York because of its Feuchtwanger association, but research by Aaron Pickard has shown it to be an issue of Robert E. Russell of Columbia, South Carolina, Russell operated a Botany Garden which included a public bath. EF details. Some light scratches are present in the fields, but are hardly distracting. We sold a far less desirable example in our June 2016 Collector's Series Sale for $650. A VF specimen fetched $2,115 in the June 2011 Steve Hayden Sale.
