Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike Road (Pennsylvania) 1795. 366 shares. Issued, uncancelled. No.366. Covered wagon approaches the entrance to the turnpike road. Printed on vellum from a metal plate, this issue is the earliest known use of a pictorial engraved vignette on an American stock certificate. Signed by William Bingham as President. William Bingham began his business career as an apprentice for Thomas Wharton, a prominent Philadelphia merchant. He later made a fortune during the American Revolution procuring munitions and produce for the army, and investing in privateering ventures. Bingham was one of the leading Philadelphia socialites, and one of the founders and director of the Bank of North America. EF.
